1. 1936 Mercedes-Benz 500K Spezial Roadster
The Louwman Museum’s delegate was a top contender for the Best of Show title, but in the end, Mercedes-Benz 500K Spezial Roadster “only” won the Coachwork Becomes Art category.
This car is one of Mercedes-Benz’s all-time masterpieces, a pinnacle of Art Deco styling and pre-war technology. The Spezial Roadster is one of the most striking versions of the type 500K. Only 25 of these luxuriously finished Spezial Roadsters were manufactured out of a total of 350 type 500Ks. The car is equipped with a five-litre, supercharged eight-cylinder engine, generating 160 hp.
This car was delivered to London, and it was discovered in a barn in the ’80s. After a thorough restoration, the car won first prize in its class at Pebble Beach in 1994 and the Briggs Cunningham Trophy in 2006, also at Pebble Beach.
