80 years of Jeep – from war economy to leisure activities

This another model anniversary that also marks the launch of a brand. Initially, the first JEEP was developed for military use as a general-purpose lightweight reconnaissance vehicle. There is no consensus about how the U.S. Army’s World War II quarter-ton reconnaissance car obtained the name jeep; some refer to the shorter version of General Purpose (GP).

Jeep has been part of Chrysler since 1987, when Chrysler acquired the Jeep brand, along with remaining assets, from its previous owner American Motors Corporation (AMC). Jeep was one of the earliest brands that took the wave of SUV mania and has found notable success throughout the decades, irrespectively of the ever-changing ownership (DaimlerChrysler, Fiat and currently Stellantis).

I am not expecting a lot of activities to commemorate the first Jeep, except for events where war museums attend (e.g. the French Tank Museum sends a few vehicles to Retromobile every year). For the next birthday brand, click the article below or scroll to the bottom for the next article!
