100 years of Maybach automobiles

This is another tricky one, as the Maybach company was actually older than 100 years. The founder, Wilhelm Maybach was the technical director of Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft until he left in 1907. He founded his own company, Luftfahrzeug-Motorenbau, already in 1909 to develop engines for the Zeppelin airships. It did not take long for him to continue with his passion for cars.

Maybach Motorenbau GmbH’s first serial production model, the W3 was unveiled in 1921. The car featured state of the art technologies for its time. It was the first German car to have four-wheel brakes. With its planetary gearbox, six-cylinder engine, sumptuous wood and leather interiors, the car was a true work of art on wheels and, of course, the star of the IAA and an instant success.

The brand kept its close ties to the Daimler Benz company that now operates a museum dedicated to the Maybach brand, that of course we visited this year.

The Maybach Museum is the best place to commemorate the brand’s 100th anniversary

I guess a visit to the Zeppelin Museum should also be included in this year’s wish list.
