8. The Peugeot 9X8 Hypercar is no longer such a drama queen
When we first heard about this car, we had really high expectations. A few decades ago, the Peugeot 905 smashed the Group C league with championship titles and arguably the best lining in the ’90s. Judging from sheer design, the 9X8 followed the footsteps of its great ancestor.
Already in 2019, when the new league was planned for the post-LMP1 era, Peugeot announced its return to the FIA World Endurance Championship, with a clear aim at winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans race and the new Hypercar category as well.
The 9X8 was designed to take full advantage of the freedoms allowed by the new Hypercar regulations. A few years ago, Peugeot bragged at car shows with vignettes, claiming that they wanted to omit spoilers.
After two years of active racing, we have to say the results did not match the design. Last year, the 9X8 finished behind all manufacturers, and this year, even newcomer BMW is ahead of the lions. Since then, Peugeot got a bit more humble with claims, but we hope they did not lose sight on victory.
