Today the EMS 2022 opened its gates to the public and awaits visitors until 11th December. The show continues with the best traditions and may break the negative trend of 2022. This year, almost every show took it back quite a bit, either in size or quality.
EMS had the best cards to reverse that trend. The 2022 edition occupies 8 halls of the vast Expo Essen area. The EMS certainly did not take back on quantity.
On the quality side, EMS offers attractions in four very different pillars, ranging from classic cars through production cars and tuning to race cars (sometimes with an occasional blur between them). The vehicles around these four topics usually fill the vast halls of the Essen Expo area. This year they had the space, but you could see some empty spots here and there.
But the four pillars are still covered, and there are some truly spectacular cars. The Classic & Prestige Salon celebrated its 40th edition and occupied halls 1 and 2 this year.
This is the heart of the show, with the booth of event organiser SIHA showcasing cars following specific themes like anniversaries (like the Mercedes SL and the AMG brand).
Around the SIHA booth, collectors presented their cherished masterpieces, and a few German museums showcased their upcoming exhibitions. The Technical Museum Speyer recently inaugurated an exhibition honouring iconic German WRC champion Walter Röhrl.
As usual, the German Bundeswehr showed up with some heavy gear, this time a Leopard 2 main battle tank.
In Hall 3, the organisers presented a special show celebrating 50 years of the iconic racing livery John Player Special.
Essen usually hosts some car brands, and the 2022 EMS followed that tradition with BMW building a proper stage worthy of an international car show.
Motorsport has been a strength of EMS, and this year’s edition is no exception. Sport is interpreted in a broad way from gigantic tractor pulling to classic car racing. Remember ESPN 8, the ocho? 🙂
This year’s show’s most robust offering came from the tuning world. Industry players erected some breathtaking stages dedicated to parts, tuning and lifestyle.
These halls offer quite a lot, from striking concepts through creative street-style designs to friendly hostesses.
We can’t say the same thing about the hall dedicated to tuning. Each car is striking in its way, they all show excellence in craftsmanship but, in many cases, also horrible taste. This hall is far away from the profile of our site, though some people might appreciate this.
The torture chambers of tuning are a recurring element of the EMS year after year. Beyond that, there is plenty of interactivity at the show. Simulators, screens, interactive programs, electric go-carts and bumper cars.
It’s a complete programme for a whole day provided you are into cars, of course. You have a good week to catch up with EMS until Sunday, 11th December.
