Flowers and coaches for the International Women’s Day

Egzostive takes this opportunity to pay tribute with a flower-abundant post to our feminine readers. There is hardly any better (politics-abstinent) topic for a car blog for the International Women’s Day.

The photos were taken in 2018, at the Floralia Flower Exhibition in Groot-Bijgaarden, at the outskirts of Brussels. Floralia is the Keukenhof of the Belgians, with less (still plenty of) flowers but with a more stylish castle building. In fact, I clearly prefer Floralia over its Dutch counterpart.

In addition to the classic buildings and the flower carpets, a large green botanic garden awaits visitors. The greenhouse is decorated with a different theme year after year. In 2018, old horse-drawn carriages were parked in the middle of the flower bouquets. I can hardly imagine a better topic than for a car blog for this day, even if I have to refrain from detailing tech specs. Instead of specs on double camshafts and twin turbos, I let the pictures do the talkin’ 🙂

The International Women’s Day is not without some controversies. It cannot be described by a single definition, the description I found in Wikipedia “a focal point in the movement for women’s rights”, is probably vague with a reason. It is traditionally a left-wing celebration tied to the activities of American socialist movements at the beginning of the 20th century.

Since 1917, March 8 is a national holiday in the Soviet Union and was predominantly celebrated by the socialist movements and communist countries, while the United Nations began observing it in 1977. Commemoration of International Women’s Day varies from being a public holiday in some countries to being largely ignored elsewhere. In some places, it is a day of protest, in others, it is a day that celebrates womanhood.

As far as I can see, this fracture line still exists today, in most Western-European countries, it is celebrated mainly by flower shops. But if your missus is from Eastern Europe and you forget to bring flowers today, you are going to eat cold meals for dinner 🙂 …
